Marriage & Family Therapy: what psych course?
I plan on going into Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family therapy or Child Psychology, which psychology course in undergrad would be more interesting and useful, Personality Theory or Developmental Psych?

MarriageCounseling answers:
Development Psychology probably. Personality theory is not such a big area of clinical psychology. Many psychologists (esp behaviorally-oriented, which a large number of child clinical psychologists are) don’t put much stock in personality theory. But both would be useful and interesting. However, realize that in order to be trained in clinical psychology, you need a graduate degree. To treat children in a clinical setting you will need a PhD or PsyD. Let me be honest with you, everything I have learned about treatment came from graduate training. Undergraduate classes are usually to general and simplified to be useful.
And neither of these specific classes are usually requirements in APA accredited clinical psyc graduate programs.

I have a master’ s in marriage and family therapy. WHat do I need to do to get LCSW?
I need something that pays better but allows me to do the same thing since we are family planning.LCSWs make much more than LMFTs

MarriageCounseling answers:
Just did a search on “LCSW” [because I was curious] and in the state I looked at, you need to have an MSW, plus 3 years of clinical experience, plus pass an exam, etc., etc.
I’d think you’d be able to find the requirements in your state by going to the state’s official website and looking for the section on licensing and/or certification.

Robert asks…
What type of therapy does someone need when they are in an abusive marriage and they don’t care about?
their kids being abused because all they care about is being with an abusive boyfriend (husband) they are obsessed with. What kind of help do these women need to make them understand that its not right to put their kids through abuse just because they are obsessed with their partner?

MarriageCounseling answers:
I have lived with every kind of abuse. I too well know ALL it does to a person. NO child should be submitted to this type lifestyle. MANY people who lived with abuse also end up being abusers themselves. This I too have lived with. These children should NOT be subjected to live under these conditions, they are innocent & have no say in the matter. Someone MUST step in to save them from their lives also being ruined by this abuse & the mother badly needs counseling as she’s a co dependent of this abusive situation. Call the authorities & if you want, it CAN be done anonymously to also protect you too. Please at least attempt to “save” the innocent children. You are a good caring person…all the best to you…:)

Richard asks…
Can I make a living with a Marriage and Family Therapy Masters degree (and an LMFT)?
I would like to pursue a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. I love the field, but am not sure that I can make a good living in the field. 1. Are there job openings in the field? 2. What kind of annual salary can I expect? 3. Is private practice (4 years from now!) lucrative? (4. Why is there no Career/Work category)?

MarriageCounseling answers:
I would go to my campus career advisors and make them find me an apprentice (private practice, group provider practice, social service agency, church ministries etc.) type job. At the least they can point you to potential employers of graduates with this degree. Your degree program should prepare you to graduate as a LICENSED therapist. There are lots of unlicensed therapists with Masters degrees in counseling. Unless they are writing books they can’t practice as licensed therapists. It is extremely difficult to secure a paid position without a license. All college career advisors should know this. No degree program is worth its salt if its graduates are not prepared to practice their craft in that state. All states require a license to practice therapy.
