William asks…
Could a Judge send you to Marriage Counseling during a Divorce case?
As the question states, if a spouse has filed for divorce against their husband/wife, are they any situations where the Judge will request that the couple attend any type of marriage counseling or anything of the sort? A friend of mine mentioned that before her parents got divorced the Judge that handled their case requested it. Any truth in that?
I must be very ignorant. I never heard of a Mediator before. Any such thing or situation like this in the state of NJ?
Yes, there are children involved.
Thanks for all the information guys. Very useful.

Betty asks…
Does marriage counseling help a marriage in trouble?
I just want to know about people’s different experiences with marriage counseling – did it help sort out you & your spouse’s differences, and was the marriage better eventually?

MarriageCounseling answers:
It almost always helps. Most of all it improves communication between the two.
It often helps two people who let minor arguments turn into big problems. Sometimes there’s a really simple solution and improving communication is all it takes to fix things.
It really does depend on the people and what their goals are. Sometimes the husband and wife have drifted too far apart and just don’t want to be together anymore. In that case, the counseling will help them realize that the marriage truly is over and it’s time to get divorced.

David asks…
what else could we use besides marriage counseling to help fix our relationship?
I cheated and he cant get past it. it has been over 2 years but he feels like i am not doing enough to make up for it. I don’t blame him. I need some advice! Marriage counseling the only option?

MarriageCounseling answers:
Sounds like you are at least communicating that is a good start.
Self help books on marriage will give a lot of guidance.[See sources]
It took you a long time to get here and it will take just as long to repair the relationship. It takes time to earn trust, but in time it will get better. With most affairs it takes 3-5 years to heal.

James asks…
In the state of Virginia can a court order a couple to go through marriage counseling?
If a child protective services agent goes to a court and says a couple needs marriage counseling but the couple claims to be happy and refuses to go to marriage counseling can the court order the couple to go to marriage counseling?

MarriageCounseling answers:
Yes if the judge says so. They put tap shoes on pick pockets there, they can send you to marriage counseling to ensure a safe environment for the children.
