Your Questions About Marriage And Family Counseling

Carol asks…

Why should people have to pay such high fees in order to obtain counseling help?

I FOUND THIS ON THE INTERNET:

“Ask Father Fred” Family and Marriage Counseling Services in Las Cruces, New Mexico offers a wide range of counseling services. Ask Father Fred provides expert individual, couple and family counseling. To keep Ask Father Fred’s services available for everyone, we never charge a fee for our services. We prefer to ask for a donation based on your financial ability. Counseling should be for everyone regardless of ability to afford it.

MarriageCounseling answers:

If they want a counsellor with good credentials and qualifications, people will have to pay for that. For example, the assistance you get from a registered Psychologist will be different to the advice that ‘Father Fred’ can offer. I’m not saying Father Fred has no place — just explaining why counselling costs so much.

Everyone should be able to afford good counselling services though, which is why the government should also contribute to paying for such services.

Thomas asks…

How do you know when its time to get marriage counseling? And how can I make my husband go?

My husband and I want to have a baby, but our sex life isnt what it needs to be to achieve conception. He is very depressed, and we have arguments occasionally that tend to get a little verbally abusive on both parts. We do love each other very much, but we have major communication problems. He has been refusing to see a counselor for the last few years, and even now, he still refuses. How can I convince him this is what we need in order to move on to the next step in our marriage. Family is important to us both. I just dont know what else to do. Any ideas?
We have been married for 8 years.

MarriageCounseling answers:

Address the depression issue first. A depressed man views the world very differently than a man with a well-balanced psyche. Be loving but firm in your encouragement that he seek the counsel of a medical professional. Strong emphasis on the loving part.

Men are not typically equipped to deal with esoteric, emotional, crises. Leave the talk of counselors out of the discussion for now. You may be the only counselor he’ll listen to. In his depressed, defensive state, he may view counselors as threatening. After all, who needs a wife and a therapist telling you what your shortcomings are.

Men solve problems. Men fix stuff. Men only go to the Dr. When their is a visible condition, i.e. Blood. We don’t suffer from conditions. This is the mentality and socialization that you are up against.

If you truly love him AND he truly loves you, then you’ll defeat his depression together. Then you can begin your family planning.

Donald asks…

Affordable accredited undergraduate college that has a psychotherapy, or counseling, major in Boston Mass?

I am eventually looking to go for a masters in family and marriage counseling. What affordable schools are there in the Boston Massachusetts area that offer a preparatory four year program for what im looking for?

MarriageCounseling answers:

I’m not sure that there are many affordable schools in Boston since the cost of living (col) is pretty high in that area :) For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

For accredited programs in counselor education: http://www.cacrep.org

If interested in social work (may need master’s degree, too): http://www.cswe.org

Accredited programs in psychology (though, as you may know, one may need a doctorate): http://www.apa.org/education/grad/program-accreditation.aspx

General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search.

For possible volunteer opportunities (perhaps including volunteering for a crisis helpline): http://www.volunteermatch.org
