Sandy asks…

Family and Marriage Therapy . MFT ?

Hi,
What happens when you got a degree in mft in an university that is not accredited by the the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE)?

Do you miss more opportunities ?

MarriageCounseling answers:

It may impact your ability to be licensed in some states, and it definitely impacts the job opportunities that you are eligible for. Unless you are going to a religious university and know that you can get a church based position (and that’s all you want), look for accreditation.

Carol asks…

Has marriage counseling or therapy helped your relationship with your spouse?

MarriageCounseling answers:

I CAN say they are truthful with you IF you also are truthful with them. IF you both really do want help, do what they tell you, you DO have a good chance of a good marriage. Mine didn’t turn out well. Went to several counselors connected with/thru AA. Also went to independent ones too. I’m a 20+ yr. Sober alcoholic. He cheated on me countless times, left me a few for others. At our very last session the counselor told him he also was a “womanizer” to get professional help with that too. After 12 yrs. Of AA & Alanon, not getting sober etc. I finally accepted it was NOT going to work. Refused to let him come “home” to go to his home a few states away. This he did & I’ve not heard from him since. I did find out he had divorced me 6 yrs. Prior to my call to “his” county court house a good while ago. But IF you’re willing to work with them, they WILL help you to the best of their ability…I DO wish you the best…:)

Jenny asks…

Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy vs Masters in Counseling?

I’m researching graduate degrees that would allow me to be a therapist/counselor in private practice, but I can’t find a definitive answer regarding the difference between an MFT and an MC. If it matters, I’ll want to practice in Arizona.

MarriageCounseling answers:

Take the time to do your research on licensing in Arizona to determine that whatever degree you acquire it is license eligible. Make sure the program you select is accredited and would make you eligible for licensure in your state. Personally, I would recommend you look at getting a master of social work degree — this is a much more flexible degree and you can become licensed for private practice.
