Jim asked:
Since the PS3 has such a huge processor, and half of it isn’t used most of the time, do you think that they’ll wait longer than say Xbox to come out with a new counsel? Since they just dropped the price in the Xbox I was wondering if it would be really worth it to invest the extra to get a PS3 that would last a couple years longer than the Xbox, or just get the Xbox since it is a good console and will be good for the time…

to be honest im getting rid of my 360 because i hardly play it anymore, i find myself playing ps3 and watching my Blurays. and Sony has gone on record stating that they expect the ps3 to have a shelf life of 10 years or more. expect the announcement of next gen systems to be within 2-3 years from now and their eventual release a year further from that.

The PS3 is going to have a very long life. The 360 is already at
MAX performance right now. The PS3 is only using maybe one third of its potential so it has a alot of space for growth as game developers learn to use the system in time. Money wise the PS3 is going to be the way to go.

No one knows for sure, but considering how much effort was put into PS3 and its technical prowess, it will be the main Sony console for at least 3 more years, at least that’s my guess.
Looking back at their past systems, PS1 had about a 5 year life span, 1995-2000, then the PS2 came in 2000, had an incredible run at 8 years and going (people are still buying them). Add the fact that the jump from PS2 to PS3 was larger than PS1 to PS2, and you probably won’t see a new one until 2012-2013.
As for what you want to get, it’s all personal choice. Each system has its quirks, with the XBOX 360′s strong online library and the PS3′s Blu Ray capabilities, etc. Research some info on each respective site (Microsoft, Sony), but sites like Ign.com and Gamespot.com also can give you opinions from critics and gamers alike.

As soon as the 360′s successor comes out (probably in 2010 or 2011), Sony will have to counter with the PS4 or be made completely obsolete. The next XBox (whatever name it has) will make the PS3 look like a PS1. That’s just how technology develops.
