My ex-wife wants me to give her and her new husband marriage counseling. Ethics question?

Pastor Bob asked:

Fortunately I am not licensed so I wouldn’t be risking anything here. But, had I been licensed, what would be the unethical part about this?

It’s a conflict of interest

You really can’t figure this out?

It’s intimidating to the new husband, and inapparopriate for you to be involved in their relationship.

If you are full of such great advice – why aren’t you still together???

That would be unethical and if you had been licensed you would know that. You would be risking one hell of a headache. While it might be secretly enjoyable for you, I wouldn’t recommend it. And yes, why would she ask her failed partner, maybe you all need counseling.

Your ex-wife’s new marriage has nothing to do with you. How strange for her to even want that. If you knew how to make a marriage work with her, wouldn’t you still be married?

It would be sleazy.

Definitely unethical. You would be very wise to refer them elsewhere.

Dual relationship.

Regardless of whether you are licensed or not, don’t be doing marital counseling with this couple. You don’t need to be privy to whatever is going on with them. This is a huge can of worms that is waiting to be opened. Don’t go there. Recommend someone else to her.

Wow, I’m amazed that someone who is perceived to have the wisdom to do marriage counseling would even have to ask this question. Your ex wife must be insane. I don’t mean to be disrespectful to you but this is way too obvious to probably 99.9 percent of the population.

Licensed? There is a lot of misunderstanding about licensing, I am not a licensed counselor in Illinois but that doesn’t stop the wheels from moving. License are like a label as if nobody can read. You can practice any time in this free country, but you can be sued for nothing. The most aggravating circumstance you can get into is being confronted by biases and you will have that here. You’d better step aside and be a part of the audience. That’s a product of our nature to be bias, a majority of therapists even such as I have been a part of psychoanalysis to eliminate the bias in therapy sessions and sometimes we don’t see this coming.
